Drift: The Story Behind the Crochet Throw

A moment that stayed with me

I want to take you right back to the very beginning of this one.

Picture this… I’m at a kinesiology session at my best friend’s house, and in the corner of the room is the most beautiful woven throw, draped so effortlessly. I instantly fell in love with the colours. You know when something just hits you? That was it.

I took a photo, knowing straight away it would become inspiration for a future crochet project.

And then… it sat in my camera roll for months. Maybe even longer.

From inspiration to colour

When I eventually came back to it, I did what I always do when building a colourway.

I got out my Stylecraft Special DK yarn pegs.

For those of you who don’t know, I have every shade wrapped around a peg with the colour name on it. Whenever I want to recreate something I’ve seen - whether that’s in nature, clothing, or a landscape - I sit with those pegs and start colour matching.

It’s one of my favourite parts of the process.

And this is where the first Drift colourway was born - what you now know as Salt & Stone.

Letting ideas percolate

Even then, it wasn’t instant.

This idea lived in my mind for a long time. That’s often how my designs work - they sit, they evolve, they quietly build in the background before they’re ready.

I knew I didn’t want to copy the original woven throw. Instead, I wanted to capture its essence.

Each row became a question:

How can I recreate this texture in crochet?
What stitch gives that same feeling?

Not identical. Just inspired.

When Drift found its identity

As soon as I started stitching, something shifted.

I was no longer in that room… I was at the coast.

The textures, the colours, the rhythm - it all started to feel like sand, minerals, weathered surfaces, and natural formations. Everything about it became coastal.

That’s when the name Drift arrived.

It felt soft, laid-back, effortless… like being by the sea. That slightly wild, natural, imperfect beauty you only get from nature.

And from that moment on, every row was guided by that feeling.

A crochet pattern that keeps you hooked

Something else became really clear as the pattern developed…

This project is incredibly ADHD-friendly.

Instead of long, repetitive sections, each row brings something new:
  •  a different stitch
  •  a new texture
  •  a colour change
There are moments of simplicity - little pockets where you can relax into repetition - but just as you settle, something new arrives to keep your brain engaged.

It keeps things interesting. It keeps you moving.

You never hit that “mountain to climb” feeling that can come with more repetitive patterns.

The evolution of colour

Once Salt & Stone was complete, I moved onto the second colourway: Sand & Sea.

And this is where things got interesting.

Sometimes a colourway looks perfect in peg form… but behaves completely differently in crochet.  And I had crocheted almost a third of the blanket before deciding to change the base colour to a different shade.  Then it not looking right in my sample swatch and realising that the first colour I chose was the right one all along!

And I had a similar experience with Salt & Stone - I originally chose a shade called Soft Peach. It looked beautiful on the pegs, but once worked up, it just didn’t sit right. It stood out too much.

So I switched it to Wild Orchid - a slightly duskier tone that blended far more naturally.

If you look closely at my sample, you’ll actually see that first row still in Soft Peach. I chose to leave it.

Because it tells the story.

And that’s part of this project - allowing space for evolution, for change, for things not being perfectly planned.

Taking Drift back to where it belongs

While working on Sand & Sea, I went away to Croyde Bay.

And I took both blankets with me.

Salt & Stone came as a finished piece. Sand & Sea was still in progress.

I sat on the beach, stitching, surrounded by sand and sea… and it just clicked.

They felt like they had come home.

I don’t know how else to describe it, but they belonged there. Completely.

From that point on, I knew:
These are beach blankets.
Holiday blankets.
The kind you wrap around you as the sun goes down.

The finishing touch: tassels

I always knew this throw needed tassels - but not just any tassels.

These have a soft macramé feel to them. Knotted, slightly undone, beautifully imperfect.

They bring the whole piece together and add something completely new if you’ve never tried this style before.

And that’s really the beauty of Drift…

You’re not just making a blanket.
You’re learning, experimenting, building new skills as you go.

How the Crochet Along will work

The Drift Crochet Along has been designed to feel manageable and enjoyable.

Each week, you’ll learn just a few new techniques as we build the first third of the blanket together.

Then we pause.

You repeat what you’ve learned twice more to complete the full throw, before coming back together for the final stage - finishing and tassels.

It’s structured in a way that supports you, rather than overwhelms you.

A final note from me

Thank you.

Truly.

The support, the excitement, the messages - it means more than I can put into words.

This project has been such a joy to create, and getting to share it with you makes it even more special.

I cannot wait to see your versions. Your colours. Your stitches. Your Drift.

And if you take it to the beach…

Please show me. Because that’s where the magic really happens.

With love
