Drift Throw Crochet Along: What You'll Need

Colours

There are two signature colourways I’ve designed for the Drift Throw using Stylecraft Special DK.

If you’ve been following the Drift story, you’ll know these colours have a beautiful coastal, mineral influence. Playing with colour and building colourways is one of my favourite parts of what I do at Ray’s Room - and creating these was no exception.

Each palette captures a slightly different mood of the coast.

Salt & Stone

Soft pinks, warm neutrals, and grey mineral tones. Think sun-warmed sand, weathered textures, and that hazy, golden-hour feeling at the beach.

Sand & Sea

Cooler, deeper tones inspired by the ocean and shoreline. Blues, greens, and natural earthy shades that feel fresh, calm, and quietly powerful.

If you’d love to support Ray’s Room in providing this free Crochet Along, you can do so by heading to the Ray’s Room website for your kit.

You’ll also receive a Ray’s Room Tote Project Bag and a Ray’s Room Colour Card for setting up your yarn colours. They’re also conveniently punched to fit into the Ray’s Room Craft Planner, so you can keep all your WIPs in one place.

Setting Up Your Colour Cards

Setting up a colour card is such a simple but helpful way to prepare for happy, relaxed crafting.

When working with multiple colours, it gives you a quick reference so you always know which shade is which. Throughout the pattern, I’ll refer to colours by their letter (Colour A, Colour B, etc.), so having your colour card ready will make things much easier as you go.

To set up your colour card:

  1. Write each colour on its own line, alongside its letter (e.g. A – Cream, B – Vintage Peach)
  2. Cut a length of yarn for each colour
  3. Fold it in half
  4. Post the loop through the hole next to the colour name
  5. Pull the ends through the loop and tighten to secure

Yarn Amounts

This section is for anyone who wants to crochet along while using up their yarn stash.

If you’ve bought the official Ray’s Room Drift Throw Kit and work based on my suggested gauge (details on gauge and tension below), you should have enough yarn (always keep your labels in case you do need to top up any shades).

I’ve based these amounts on what I had left over from working at my tension with Stylecraft Special DK yarn 100g balls, plus I’ve added on 20g to the amount I used.

Please bear in mind that different brands’ yardage can vary, so where possible I recommend starting with full 100g balls of each colour. If you’re using up your stash, you can use the amounts below as guidance - but remember, tension and yardage could affect this. Only use yarn if you know you have more than enough or it’s possible to buy more if needed.

I’ve written this pattern using Stylecraft Special DK acrylic yarn. I’m sure it will work beautifully in other fibres and weights, but my yarn amount guidance is based on the above range of yarn.

Yarn amounts:

  • Colour A – 400g
  • Colour B – 100g
  • Colour C – 50g
  • Colour D – 85g
  • Colour E – 50g
  • Colour F – 30g
  • Colour G – 100g

Crochet Hook

We’re working with DK yarn and the standard suggested hook size - 4mm.

If your tension usually comes up tighter, you may want to go up a hook size. If your tension tends to be looser, you may want to go down a size.

On Day 1, we’ll look at gauge and tension together, but if you’d like a head start:

You’re aiming for 15 htr chainless foundation stitches = 10cm

Smaller than 10cm → go up a hook size

Larger than 10cm → go down a hook size

If you’re happy for your throw to vary slightly in size, you can choose to work with a 4mm hook regardless. Just bear in mind that looser tension will use more yarn.  If you're using the kit and not following the tension/gauge guidance you may run out.

Working with a different tension can also affect the drape of your throw. A tighter tension may result in a stiffer fabric, whereas a looser tension will give you more movement and softness.

Other Bits You’ll Need

The rest is all the usual crochet essentials:

  • Darning needle (for sewing in ends)
  • Scissors (for colour changes, trimming, and tassels)
  • Stitch markers (for keeping track of your work)

You’ll find all of these in the Ray’s Room online shop, craft goodies section. If there’s something you need that isn’t there, just let me know and I’ll update stock.

It's almost time to Drift along!

That’s everything you need to get yourself set up and ready for the Drift Crochet Along.

Take your time with this part - getting your colours organised and your yarn ready makes such a difference once we begin. It allows you to settle in, enjoy the process, and really get lost in the rhythm of the stitches from the very start.

I’ll be guiding you through everything step by step as we go, so there’s no pressure to have it all perfect - just come as you are, with whatever you’ve got ready.

I honestly cannot wait to start this with you.

If you haven’t already, make sure you’ve joined the Crochet Along FB event, signed up to the Ray's Room email newsletter and keep an eye on socials for updates.

We’re going to have the most beautiful few weeks making this together.

With love
